Dear Every Logo Designer,

Let's all, on any new logo design requests we get, respond with "ONE MILLION DOLLARS". Everyone do it, starting now, so when these clients shop around, they get the same answer from anyone, "ONE MILLION DOLLARS", has to be all upper case.

If the oil companies can do it, so can we. We too fuel businesses

*Disclaimer - this in no way is an attempt at price fixing*

As far as payment goes, I usually charge by the hour and add up a total of hours I think I'll be on the project. I give the client a total and then split the payment so I always get what I need up front. Like something to start the project, something to continue after the revisions, etc. I think this can give the client more freedom for situations where they may need to cancel a project or if something comes up. That way they don't get stuck paying a whole lot for something they can't afford.

Thanks though. You have good comments.
J

I have read the article. Personally I don't buy into the whole "calculate your overhead" scenario. I think that assumes that you can equate design to just producing a product. I feel what you can do to give your clients some idea of cost is give them an hour range and itemize how you came up with that number. This will give them some piece of mind knowing how much to expect but also places some accountability on the client. If they bombard you with revisions you either a) get paid for your time spent or b) have some legal ammo if a dispute arises.

Good point. I found a cool site for calculating freelance prices too.

However, people are never paying millions of dollars just for a logo. They pay for branding services that happen to have a visual final product. For instance, the xerox rebrand wasn't just the final graphic. It also included months and months of research, development of a new branding strategy, etc, etc. Interbrand isn't just 3 guys in a warehouse somewhere ya know :-)

I rarely hear of 'owning rights' being an additional fee. Having a logo but not the copyright makes for a rather useless logo.

As for pricing, you simply need to charge what you need to charge to make a living at what you are doing. Logo/branding projects range from the tens of dollars to the millions of dollars, so there certainly is no stock answer in terms of scope and cost specifics.

It could also depend on your location. I live in Michigan, and nobody in their right mind would pay $2,000-$15,000 for a logo. I rather just take my chances with the $500, and trust me, I have a hard time finding someone to do even that. There are just too many places out there that are allowing you to pay minuscule prices for full service. Thanks for writing though. I enjoy the debate.
J

of course if it's a small business you can't just carge 15.000. I think a 2.000 would be ok. Even if it's a small business, and identity is for a life. Imagine that the business might grow and part of the growing can be becouse of a good brand. Everyone remeber and like good brands.

I really think it depends on the business you'd be designing for. If GE wanted you to do a logo, then I think you'd charge more money than say a local pizza place. I think that $15,000 might be high for just the logo and rights. If you meant $1,500, that would be reasonable for a decent sized business.
J
