Re: Logo timestamping

my only concern ( i got your email and set something back saying as much) is how this affects people who use it and people who don't if this gets established whats to stop me from having created something and not used the service and someone ripping me and then using it and then stacking it as claim that I the original artist ripped them? Thats whats been eating at me since I read over this more.

I guess there would have to be some language from the service that states that this does not set a legal precedent in terms of ownership just simply another option for controlling your own work?

Re: Logo timestamping

Yeah, I hear you. This was bugging me as well. Specifically, let say this thing gets off the ground and people start timestamping their old work. This will lead to a bunch of works stamped at or around the launch date, and I can see this leading to the confusion when someone's in a dispute over an older work.

The way I think this should be handled is by (and just echoing what you said above)

  • crystal clear messaging (that the work is at least this old, doesn't establish original ownership, etc)

  • allowing more than one proof of existence to be associated with every work; that's what I meant by archive.org linking

Re: Logo timestamping

epsilon: it makes perfect sense. And it's a great idea.

Alas, the issue on IP infringement is really a legal one, not a technical one.

If you decide to maybe move towards making this some sort of service, you might want to consult with an IP Lawyer to see what maybe could be done to make it a marketable service that would in some way be useful to the legal community that would be working with those using the service.

Re: Logo timestamping

David and I went over some organizational stuff earlier this week, so this project is not stalled or abandoned. Stay tuned for the updates.

Re: Logo timestamping

The stub of a website is up. There is a sign-up form for progress update emails. If you are interested in this project, I would very much like to bounce off the design and functionality ideas off people who it is being developed for.

I will keep posting the updates here as well.

Re: Logo timestamping

Teaser #2

logopond.cab is a so-called Windows cabinet archive that contains logopond.png. The archive bears an electronic signature of CertTime and a digital timestamp of VeriSign.

The signature proves that the archive was created by CertTime and not some other company or an individual. The timestamp proves that VeriSign had observed CertTime's signature at recored time, i.e. it proves the existence of the exact contents of the archive at that specific time.

To verify the timestamp manually:

  • Download and save the archive somewhere on your local disk

  • Right-click on it in Windows Explorer

  • Select Properties

  • Select Digital Signatures

  • Select CertTime signature, click Details

http://www.certtime.com/img/logopond-timestamp.jpg

This digital signature is OK status means that Windows has verified the signature and the timestamp to be valid and produced by CertTime and VeriSign respectively as indicated in the other two highlighted fields below.

The actual logopond.png file can be extracted from the archive by any decent archive software such as WinZip or 7zip.

Re: Logo timestamping

I have set up a twitter account http://twitter.com/certtime and I will try and provide regular (more regular) updates there. Follow if interested. Retweets are also appreciated, the more people learn about the project the better for the beta.

Re: Logo timestamping

Website design has been done. Next is slicing the sketch into HTML/CSS. Then - private beta.

Little teaser if anyone cares.

Re: Logo timestamping

An update.

Primarily working on HTML/CSS for the website at the moment. I had to go back and re-sketch some parts of the site, and that ate some time. Quite a bit of it actually. It is coming together. Slowly but steadily.

Just to add some eye candy to the otherwise boring thread, here is a couple of shots of the Login dialog done in two slightly different styles:

and

Re: Logo timestamping

An update.

The actual site coding - HTML, JS and whatnot - is taking substantially longer than I expected, but now it is only two pages away from the beta. I am planning to send out first handful of invites within next two weeks.

A small teaser if anyone cares. Here is a live shot of the timestamp information page - http://certtime.com/sketches/shot-15-02-10.html. The References section will change, the server will visit the URLs provided, scan for them for the time references and display them right on the References page.

Sweet Alex, looking forward to it!

Re: Logo timestamping

Beta is ready to go. A couple of final rounds of sanity testing and I will be sending out the first batch of invites.
